I still have a few pages left to go, but I have no urge whatsoever to finish the damned thing; it's disjointed, and confusing, and Batman has some sort of bat-revolution...

Wow.
-C

(Mads- here's the site where I found the preview pages of that comic featuring 'Saturn and Daylighter' and all that jazz: http://www.thecomicfanatic.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=549&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 )

As if I didn't have enough fandoms already, Maddy has introduced me to the wonder that is The Authority; I picked up my first issues at the comic book store on Thayer (A comic book store at which I can fuel my expensive hobby in close proximity to my dorm. Just what I needed.) and found myself immediately hooked on the current plotline... Since then I've read four single issues, five trade paperbacks (four of which are Maddy's, of course), and the digital equivalent of another complete storyline. Actually, that all happened yesterday. Wow.

I would absolutely adore being hired to do an issue or offshoot of this comic; the characters are so much fun in terms of their designs and interactions, and, sincerely, anything would be better than previous artists that've been hired... Some of the pencils & inks are so weird it blows the mind. I thank god that the writing and plot tend to hold up on their own even with the bad art, as that's always a sign of a good comic. A few lines and situations seem to be a bit ooc in my mind, though; would Midnighter- Mr. "I Fight Homophobia With A Boot Through Your Skull"- be married to an Apollo who'd use the term 'fag hag'? Eh. I tend to glaze over those lines and pretend that Apollo was, y'know, posessed for a second; he's too darling and too much of a dad to say that to Angie.

Oh, and Apollo and Midnighter? <3. I love them as characters, I love them as parents, and I love them as a couple. So awesome.

Why are there so many issues of, um, everything...? Trying to get through Impulse, YUoung Justice, and a smattering of other series is tiring.

-C

I have so many fandom-related rants and raves cooped up in me that I don't know what to do with myself... But I suppose college is to blame for the fact that I haven't put them to paper yet. Both my sketchbook and my livejournal seem to be void of relevance. Aaaarg.

I was sitting at lunch to day with some class- & hallmates, and Harry Potter managed to weasel its way into the conversation, as it so often does. Hrm. I tend to find myself in the most uncomfortable situation when it comes to real-life (gasp!) discussion of my geekeries; I take my fandoms so seriously, for better or for worse, that I usually exclude myself from these discussions just because I know I'll come off as extremely protective. Having participated in most of my fandoms online for many years, I know which topics and speculations are either resolved, or are otherwise beating the proverbial dead horse. I know the theories behind the twinkle in Dumbledore's eye, I know the confuddlement that arises over the lack of female centaurs- I know. I've seen the things debated over and over in forums, I'm very aware of the possibilities and answers that are out there, and so I also have a tendency to quickly respond to questions when they arise with an unintentional sort of know-it-all, Hermione-esque tone. I'm just used to discussing these things with Maddy or other seriously informed fans (you know, the ones where you can bring up an obscure character who was written out of a book in early drafts and they'll know exactly what you're talking about), so I, consequently, tend to be unable to communicate with casual fans for long periods of time.

Recently I've resorted to referring people to major websites and leaving the room, but we'll see how long that works for.

But I digress- Harry Potter came up at lunch. I kept my big maw shut, because I didn't want to ruin things, but everyone was bringing up how the time travel didn't make sense to them in the films and I just wanted to rant on for a few minutes about how it did work, and here's how it worked, and here's what changed from the books, and... And... Yeah. But I didn't, because I can only assume that I'd come off as an elitist fan á la the nitpicking Trekkies of old- even though I would really just be trying to inform everybody with the best of intentions. Instead I just nodded, and smiled, and got frustrated. Grr. But then the conversation drifted over to how Book 5 sucked, and I just had to stop listening... I've heard the 'OMG Book 5 was so fake and she just wants money now and Harry was sooooo annoying' argument many, many times, and I just wasn't in the mood to debate it. I loved book 5 because Harry acted just like I did when I was 15, and I would never doubt JK's dedication to the series... She doesn't need the moneyk, yet she's still putting time into the books because she loves them. That's pretty awesome in my book.

Now I sleep.
-C

Figured I might as well do some Fannish5 surveys, seeing as they're oodles of fun.

1. What are the physical characteristics of a character that turn you on, and give at least one exapmle.
Though I rarely find myself primarily attracted to a character physically, the more interesting attributes tend to catch my eye- most mainstream faces, male and female, are hideously boring; it's the ones with lines and character that really stand out in my mind.
2. What are the physical characteristics of a character that turn you off, and give at least one example.
Seriously, mainstream beauty- not to put it down, really, but I'm so tired of it; if it was balanced out with other body types and features, then I wouldn't mind it as much.
3. What are the personality characteristics that turn you on, and give at least one example.
Smarts- I very easily fall for well-read and quick-witted characters, especially considering how much of a part dialogue plays in defining who someone is; in novels, anyway.
4. What are the personality characteristics that turn you off, and give at least one example.
Stupidity, effervescence, egotism, a lack of moral priorities... The list goes on.
5. What kind of clothing (or lack thereof) is most likely to make you melt like a puddle around your character, and give at least one example.
Nudity is cool, I'll be the first to admit, but it rarely causes me to 'melt.' Accurate period male clothing, on the other hand (on both male and female characters), merits a guaranteed 'Rowrr' or two. I love the class and thought that goes into historically accurate costuming, and the idea that your social standing could be defined by your dress alone- it's dramatically more interesting than modern male attire.

1. What is your favorite theme song?
Hm- I guess I'd have to say the theme from MYST, simply because the game was such a staple of my childhood.
2. What is your favorite soundtrack?
That's horrible- you can't ask that to someone who listents to soundtracks almost exclusively. Nevertheless, I've always been particulary fond of the MYST soundtracks, and Prince of Egypt still sends shivers up my spine. And Lord of the Rings. And Twelfth Night. And Dune. Crap!
3. What song(s) reminds you of your fandom(s)?
Ron Sexsmith's Miracle in Itself- Frodo & Sam's journey, epitomized.
4. What song reminds you of your pairing?
Erm, well, ditto.

-C
